Midwest Industrial Coatings – Case Study

Client:
Feltes Sand and Gravel
Project:
Double Screw Processing Unit
Application:
Abrasion Resistant Coating on Surface
   Customer:
Feltes Sand and Gravel, located in Elburn, IL, is the leading producer of sand and gravel construction materials in the Chicago area. They mine sand, gravel and boulders for diverse contractors, homeowners and specialty applications.
   Problem:

The company was having abrasion problems with its 54-inch double screw processing unit. The metal pan has worn from consistent abrasion due to processing of aggregates. The bottom end was worn to less than 1/8-inch in total thickness of remaining metal. The original manufacturer of the double screw, Eagle Iron Works, recommended to Dan Bree, Operations Manager at Feltes, that the pan be lined with Rhino Linings Tuf Stuff®.
   Solution:
Because of the abrasive nature of the materials processed from the company’s quarry, a thin coating was not the optimal choice for this application. Rhino Linings was chosen because of its unlimited thickness capabilities, it’s abrasive qualities in highly abrasive environments and the fast cure for quick turn around to operational abilities. Rhino Linings’ Tuff Stuff®‘ formulation was sprayed at a thickness of 1/2-inch on the bottom and 1/4-inch on the sidewalls of the screw box.
   Results:

After the application, the company put the screw back in service, resulting in less than 48 hours of down time. The application was completed during off production hours, so there was no delay the operations or infringement on production. The cost savings is un-measurable.

When the coating eventually wears down, it can be reapplied with less preparation than the first coating, with predictable reapplication time and life span.
