Midwest Industrial Coatings – Case Study

Client:
US Forestry Service
Project:
HVAC Containment Area
Application:
Secondary Containment
   Customer:
Located in Madison, surrounded by the University of Wisconsin - Madison campus, the United States Forest Services office contains testing facilities, laboratories and offices that support the US Forest Service nationwide. One of the remarkable features of the US Forest Service building is the elegant use of wood throughout its 1930s architecture.
   Problem:
An HVAC system located internally on the third floor has on occasion backed up and created a small flood situation that could potentially damage the unique flooring and a key testing laboratory directly below. A flood of sizable proportion took place, not only jeopardizing the slatted wood floor, but it destroyed the laboratory, equipment and experiments in progress below.
   Solution:
Because the HVAC unit could not be disconnected, lifted and fitted with a pan to catch an overflow of water at a cost effective price, another alternative had to be created. Midwest Industrial Coatings formed a 6" barrier of a unique shape surrounding the HVAC unit and sprayed under the unit, to the surrounding barrier and into the newly constructed drain. By utilizing Rhino Linings' TUFF STUFF®, we were able to spray in areas that could not be accessed and created a monolithic coating.
   Results:

Two years after application, there has been two known floods that were caused by the HVAC system that were completely contained and drained without incident. Midwest Industrial Coatings has also created other secondary containment solutions for the US Forestry Department within the same building.
